Change is a part of life.
Some changes we welcome. Others we fight against, or avoid or deny. All changes, even those we welcome, involve loss and sometimes grief. Something must be let go of for something new to come in. New experiences cause us to look at what we believe or how we do things and ask if we need to see things or do things differently – and that causes anxiety. Predictability brings comfort because we have a sense of control and safety. Change raises our anxiety level because things are not as predictable. This is why the phrase “change is difficult, but change is good” resonates with me.
Foundational to my faith journey is the belief that God meets us where we are and encourages us to go from where we are to where we could be. As our world view expands, it can challenge our assumptions, practices and beliefs. This is why our faith needs to evolve and change as our life experiences change. While in some ways God does not change, our understanding of God needs to change. It needs to deepen and develop.
As we begin our ministry together there are many unknowns. Some of our questions will be answered quickly and easily. Others will take more time and may involve deeper dialog and discernment. Through it all we need to “trust in God as we find our way”, for that is the essence of faith. The question each of us needs to ask is, are we open to God being a part of the process? Will we allow God to guide us?
God does not send us anywhere that God is not already present. God goes with us and before us.
I look forward to our getting to know each other. As in every new relationship there will be some uncertainty. There is also a common purpose: to discern what God is calling us to do and be, as individuals and as a community of faith. I hope you will join me in this journey as together we trust in God’s grace and seek to be led by God’s vision, wisdom and love.
Peace,
Eric
